I’m not plotting to install my son as next Awujale — Subomi Balogun

Billionaire banker and philanthropist, Otunba Subomi Balogun, has said he was not plotting to make his son, Ladi, the next Awujale and Paramount Ruler of Ijebuland.

Balogun, who is the founder of First City Monument Bank (FCMB) Group, expressed disappointment over reports that he was positioning his son for the Awujale stool.
This was contained in a statement made available to New Telegraph on Monday by one of Balogun’s media aides in Ijebu-Ode, Oluwaseun Oduneye.
It was against the backdrop of the furore generated by the recent warning of the Awujale and Paramount Ruler of Ijebuland, Oba Sikiru Adetona, that kingmakers should not politicize the selection of his successor nor allow moneybags to take over the royal stool.
Oba Adetona, at the 2019 Ojude Oba festival in Ijebu-Ode, had asked relevant stakeholders to consider capability, competence and merit in choosing the candidate to fill the Awujale stool after his demise.
Our correspondent learnt that the Awujale’s statement sparked off series of debates among sons and daughters of Ijebuland, with speculation that Balogun was positioning his son and Group Chief Executive of FCMB Group, Mr Ladi Balogun, as the next Awujale.
But Balogun, who is the Olori Omoba of Ijebuland and head of Fusengbuwa Ruling House, said there was no truth in the reports about his son allegedly scheming for the stool.
He said his son was too busy at FCMB to be planning to succeed the reigning Awujale.
