Aisha Achimugu, Founder/President of SAM Empowerment Foundation (SEF), a non-governmental organisation, has urged women to support themselves like their male counterparts do.

Achimugu said it was unfortunate that women do not get the kind of support given to men in society.

She spoke Friday in Abuja on the sidelines of her 50th birthday celebration and SEF’s 10 years humanitarian service and impact to humanity.

“I’m unapologetically a feminist. I love to support women and we will do more as a team. It is high time women began to help each other by behaving like men who only support themselves.

“There are women who come out genuinely in politics and their sisters don’t support them. I think we also need to prove ourselves more that we can be that mother both at home and in public and then the government can trust us more,” she said.

On what her NGO had achieved in the past 10 years, she said: “It gives us joy to see people smile. Our acronym is to give joy, hope and courage to the needy. In 10 years, SEF has done so many things. We’re not doing it for show, but impact

“We have done loads of education; giving back. We have done loads of healthcare. We have done advocacy. We have reached people at different points of need. We’ve empowered women in skills because the essence of empowerment is giving back so that whoever you’re given has strengths to give back to another person.

“In summary, SEF is a home for all. It is a one stop shop for the needy. I hope to reach out to every needy human being in the globe in the coming years.”

Asked what distinguishes SEF from other foundations, Achimugu said: “We do community giving by going to different communities and touching lives. We pick them from their homes and see the livelihood of those people and empower them.

“We also follow up on progress of what our empowerment has done. When we see how you have done in the first stage of our empowerment, we do more.”
