The family of Isaac Hayes says they are exploring legal action against Donald Trump for the unauthorised use of a song belonging to the late American songwriter.
On Tuesday, the former US president announced his bid for the White House at his Mar-a-Lago mansion, Palm Beach, Florida.
It was gathered that Trump ended his speech by playing ‘Hold On I’m Comin’, the 1996 hit song by Sam and Dave, the R&B duo.
The song which had become a trademark walkout tune for Trump over the last year was written by David Porter and Hayes, who passed away in 2008.
In a Twitter post, the singer’s family said they didn’t give Trump permission to use the song for his presidential bid announcement.
“Once again, the estate and family of Isaac Hayes DID NOT APPROVE of the use of ‘Hold On I’m Coming’ by Sam and Dave by Donald Trump at his 2024 presidential announcement tonight,” the tweet reads.
“We are exploring multiple legal options to stop this unauthorised use. Stopping a politician from using your music is not always an easy task.
“But we are dedicated to making sure that Donald Trump does not continue to use ‘Hold On I’m Coming’ written by Isaac Hayes and David Porter in further rallies and public appearances.”
This stretches the list of artistes who have asked Trump not to play their songs at his political events.
In 2018, Rihanna warned the former US president to stop playing her songs at what she described as his “tragic rallies”.
Pharrell Williams also cautioned Trump against playing ‘Happy’, his hit song, at his campaign rallies. (The Cable)
