At least 20 people, including children, have been killed and dozens more wounded as Israel carries out air raids across the Gaza Strip, according Doha based broadcaster – Al Jazeera.

Gaza’s Civil Defence said that five people, including two women and a child, were also killed by an Israeli bombardment that targeted a residential apartment building in the west of Gaza City.

Medical sources told Al Jazeera that the death toll from Monday’s attacks on the Gaza Strip was 33.

Eight civilians were killed and others were injured on Monday evening in an Israeli bombing on the southern part of Gaza City, near the Rafah crossing.

Some local sources said five civilians were killed and others were injured in another Israeli air raid targeting a residential apartment belonging to the Abu Bakr family in the Tel al-Hawa neighborhood south of Gaza City.

Three civilians were also killed after the Israeli military shelled a group of civilians near the Rafah land crossing south of the Strip.

On Monday, the Health Ministry in Gaza said Israeli attacks had so far killed at least 40,988 people and wounded 94,825 others.

Meanwhile, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, in an interview with the AP news agency, offered to monitor any ceasefire in Gaza and demanded an end to what he termed as the worst death and destruction he has seen during his tenure.

Guterres said it is “unrealistic” to think the UN could play a role in Gaza’s future, either by administering the territory or providing a peacekeeping force, because Israel is unlikely to accept that.

But, he said, “the UN will be available to support any ceasefire”.

“The level of suffering we are witnessing in Gaza is unprecedented in my mandate as secretary-general of the United Nations. I’ve never seen such a level of death and destruction as we are seeing in Gaza in the last few months.”

The World Food Programme (WFP) said 2.2 million Palestinians in Gaza are still in “urgent” need of food and livelihood assistance as Israeli attacks on the enclave enter 12th month.
