Kemi Adetiba speaks on risky story behind ‘To Kill A Monkey’
Award-winning filmmaker Kemi Adetiba has shared the emotional and creative risks she took in making her latest blockbuster, To Kill A Monkey (TKAM), describing it as one of the most daring projects of her career.
In a statement posted to her fans, Adetiba expressed overwhelming gratitude for the public’s support, revealing that the film’s raw storytelling and emotionally complex characters marked a departure from her previous works.
“TKAM is unlike anything I’ve ever done,” she said. “It was a crazy risk to take, but it was a story I strongly felt I needed to tell – no gloss, no theatrics, no grandiose characters to hide behind. Just a raw, human story.”
The film, which explores what could push a morally upright person to their breaking point, has sparked widespread conversations about ethics, survival, and the ripple effects of hard choices.
Adetiba explained that her intention was to challenge viewers to reflect on how easy it is to judge when one isn’t living in desperation.
“Everyone thinks they know what they’d do when faced with a moral crossroad,” she wrote. “But that answer often comes from a place of comfort and privilege.”
With themes that dig into human vulnerability and moral ambiguity, To Kill A Monkey has become a massive success, thanks to word-of-mouth, critical acclaim, and fan support.
“You all turned TKAM into a monster hit!!” Adetiba said. “You validated this story. You validated me. And I will never forget this feeling.”
The director, known for The Wedding Party and King of Boys, hinted that the film’s impact has exceeded her expectations, all thanks to the audience.
