It has been more than twenty days since Lionel Messi’s contract with Barcelona expired.

Talks of a renewal have been doing the rounds, but an official announcement is yet to be made as the Catalans continue to find ways to trim down their wage bill to accommodate the 34-year-old’s new contract.

Now, the official website of La Liga has removed Messi’s name from the Barcelona squad, while also taking down his page as an official player of the Spanish top-flight. While it is natural for the league to take down a player’s name who is no longer contracted to a club, but it still is noteworthy.

Messi has spent his entire career at Barcelona. The six-time Ballon d’Or winner came close to leaving the club last summer but was convinced to stay put.
Having stayed, the 34-year-old enjoyed a fine season on an individual level, while he also led Argentina to Copa America glory, which has made him one of the favourites to win the Ballon d’Or 2021.

As for his future, Messi is widely expected to sign a renewal with Barcelona, with a contract on lowered terms already being agreed. However, the Blaugrana still need to make significant cuts into their wage bill for them to be able to register their former captain while staying within the league’s salary cap limits.

Currently away on a holiday after his triumph with the Argentine national team, it remains to be seen when Messi will be able to re-sign for Barcelona.
