Five days after the removal of two principal officers and suspension of two members by the Lagos State House of Assembly, it is still unclear what their offence is.

When reporters yesterday asked the spokesperson for the Assembly, Tunde Braimoh, after a parliamentary session, what constituted ‘insubordination’ and ‘misconduct’, which the Speaker gave as reasons for the action at plenary on Monday, all he said was that the issues were being handled internally.

He said: “We are in the process of conflict resolution. We don’t want to talk about what constitutes gross insubordination and indiscipline.”

Braimoh said the House has set up a committee headed by Ibrahim Layode to look into the issues surrounding the removal of the two principal officers and suspension of two other members.

He said the House followed due process in its action on Monday as stipulated in Order 10 Rule 68 to 72 of the House Business Rules.

He said although the House had issues with some lawmakers bordering on indiscipline, the legislators were united.

Braimoh said that conflicts were inherent part of human nature, adding that when they come, there are mechanisms to resolve them.

“Those who are being reprimanded are our colleagues, they are not outcasts, and we belong to the same party.

“We are mindful that the image of the House is at stake and we want to tell you that the people affected are not outcasts, they are our colleagues.

“The committee headed by Ibrahim Layode is looking at amicable resolution of the matter.

“All the issues about offices, access to Assembly and others will be addressed by the committee,” he said

Braimoh said at the briefing, witnessed by most members of the House, including the Speaker and other principal officers that the way the two suspended principal officers were replaced was normal.

The new Deputy Majority Leader, Noheem Adams, said that his emergence was based on the decision of the House, noting that he was not desperate to become the Deputy Majority Leader.

The new Chief Whip, Mojisola Miranda, said the Assemby was one big family and that there was no quarrel among the lawmakers.
