Lagos government to saction Mega Plastic over water Hydrant, says director LSFRS
Director, Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service(LSFRS), Margaret Adeseye indicated yesterday that the Lagos State Government may sanction Mega Plastic, Ilupeju bypass, Mushin, Lagos for the non-installation of water hydrant around portion of the firm gutted by fire yesterday. Fire outbreak was reported at the fire at 7:26.am yesterday.
The intensity of the fire continues due to the chemical and not until around 4.p.m when the fire was finally subdued by the LSFRS in the warehouse but it continued to burn in six containers placed on each which contained chemical substances. Despite several tanks deployed and five fire stations including Ilupeju, Bolade, and Alausa Fire Stationson ground, the fire continued to threaten sue to the involvement of petrochemical products. There was no casualties recorded, and no injusy.
The storage and factory sections of the petrochemical company were affected.The Guardian noted that there is only one entrance to the company with no water hydrant sighted.
Speaking with The Guardian at the scene of the incident, Adeseye said: “We had challenges while trying to access the scene of the incident due to the entrance to the scene being under lock and we couldn’t access the building for fire fighting for a while, however, we commenced immediately we got in and we were on top of the situation.
“We were able to prevent the fire from spreading to the adjoining buildings and where the company has its machines and storage. There was no injury or death.
She added: “We are yet to know the cause of the fire but the information we got was that there were chemicals stored in the area where the fire emanated from, we are investigating.
“Our response was fantastic; we had five stations that combated the outbreak. Speaking on the absence of water hydrant around the scene, she said: “We noticed that there was no water hydrant and that’s what we have been telling organisations, that there should be an hydrant in their premises but on getting here, we discovered that there’s no water hydrant but the Neighbour has. Definitely, the state government will sanction them for it.
