Late Irish singer Sinead O’Connor leaves £1.7m, music rights, ashes decision to children

Legendary singer Sinead O’Connor, famously known for her global hit Nothing Compares 2 U,left a legacy worth £1.7 million to her children before her tragic death at the age of 56 in 2023.

According to a report by The Sun, the Irish star, in her will, encouraged her children to capitalise on her music sales, stating they should “milk it for what it’s worth.”

The music icon was discovered lifeless in her London apartment in 2023, just 18 months after the devastating loss of her 17-year-old son, Shane, who took his own life.

According to probate records in Ireland, Sinead’s estate, valued at £1.7 million gross, was reduced to £1.4 million after settling debts, funeral costs, and legal fees.

In her 2013 will, signed before her conversion to Islam, Sinead detailed her final wishes, asking to be dressed in priestly attire for her burial and accompanied by a Hebrew Bible and her music album in her coffin.

She also left the decision of what to do with her ashes to her children, saying, “My children can dispense my ashes as they see fit.”

The mother of four, who sold over 6.2 million albums worldwide, had specific plans for her belongings. Her religious regalia was intended for her late son Shane, while her youngest child, 18-year-old Yeshua Bonadio, was to inherit her prized collection of guitars.

Music producer John Reynolds, Sinead’s former husband and long-time collaborator was named as the executor of her will. The pair married in 1987 but ended their union in 1991.

Although details of her British estate have not yet been revealed, Sinead’s cause of death was attributed to complications from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and bronchial asthma.

However, her former partner, Dermott Hayes, believes her death was more of a heartbreak, following the immense grief of losing her son, Shane.

In one of her final social media posts, Sinead wrote, “Losing a kid isn’t good for the soul.”
