Latest killing of Nigerians in South Africa senseless, says NiDCOM
Chairman/Chief Executive Officer, Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM), Abike Dabiri-Erewa, has described the killing of two Nigerian traders in South Africa by gunmen as intolerable and senseless, with a call to bring the culprits to book.
Dabiri-Erewa, in a statement by NiDCOM spokesperson, Abdur-Rahman Balogun, disclosed the Nigerian High Commission in South Africa was looking into the matter.
She recalled that the early warning mechanism put in place by both countries to prevent such killings had yet to be implemented by South Africa.
The NiDCOM boss condoled with the bereaved families, assuring them that justice would be served.
It was gathered that two Nigerians simply identified as Austin and Ayo were shot dead by masked gunmen in Durban, South Africa.
According to unconfirmed reports, the gunmen stormed Austin’s office, shot him and his visitor, Ayo, point blank and they died on the spot.
Following tension rising among the Nigerian community in South Africa, Dabiri-Erewa appealed for calm and urged Nigerians not to take laws into their hands while awaiting the outcome of the investigations by the South African police.
She added that the Acting Nigerian High Commissioner in South Africa demanded a thorough and fair investigation into the incident.
