A middle aged man in Kabeama coastal settlement of Sagbama Local Government Area of Bayelsa State, simply identified as Tony, has allegedly beheaded his girlfriend, Ebibraaladei Maxwell.
The News Agency of Nigeria learnt the tragic incident involved the unmarried, but live-in couple who have a child.
According to neighbours, the incident occurred in the early hours of Saturday, at about 3am, with the severed head of the victim discovered at dawn.
The residents subsequently apprehended Tony as he attempted to flee the scene.
He was subsequently handed over to the police.
Spokesman of the Bayelsa State Police Command, Musa Mohammed, confirmed the incident.
Mohammed, an Assistant Superintendent of Police, said the victim is in custody and undergoing interrogation.
It was gathered that operatives from Sagbama Police Division evacuated the remains of Maxwell and deposited it at the morgue of the Federal Medical Centre in Yenagoa, the Bayelsa State capital.
