Christian Eriksen has verbally agreed to join Manchester United, The Athletic understands.

Eriksen has communicated to United that he wants to play for the Old Trafford club and is prepared to accept their proposal of a three-year deal.

The process of drafting contracts has now started and if that is finalised, the 30-year-old playmaker would need to come through medical tests.

This is normal for all recruits and no problems are anticipated on that front, but given Eriksen’s history it is a significant hurdle that needs to be navigated.

The Denmark international collapsed on the pitch at Euro 2020 after suffering a cardiac arrest.

He was fitted with an implantable cardioverter-defibrillator — which meant he was unable to resume his career with then-club Inter Milan due to Serie A rules.

The Italian club agreed to terminate his deal before he joined Brentford. He joined the club for the second half of last season and played 11 times in the Premier League, scoring once.

Eriksen previously represented Tottenham Hotspur between 2013 and 2020. He played 226 times in the Premier League and scored 51 goals for the north London side. He began his senior career at Ajax.
