One Musa Faisal, who was linked to the alleged acid attack on his 26-year old UNIMAID girlfriend, Fatima Usman, has been arrested by the police officers attached to the Borno state command.
The arrest of the suspect who poured acid on his UNIMAID girlfriend who he dated for over four years, was announced by the Commissioner of Police (CP) in Borno state, Mr Damian Chukwu during a press briefing in Maiduguri on Thursday.
Fatima Usman, a final year student of Department of Nursing, University of Maiduguri (UNIMAID) was attacked with corrosive fluid by suspected tricycle operators in Maiduguri on March 16, and sustained serious injuries on the face and other parts of her body as a result of the attack.
One Muhammad Babangida, who conspired with Faisal to attack the girl because her parents rejected the later’s marriage proposal, was also arrested by the Police Officers. The commissioner said preliminary investigation indicated that the suspects conspired and assaulted the girl, contrary to the notion that she was attacked by tricycle operators.
He added that “our findings indicated that the girl and the suspect had been meeting in secret for a long period of time.
“On the day of the attack, she arranged to meet the suspect at a hotel in Galadima area of Maiduguri and while they were inside a room, his accomplice, Muhammad Banbangida joined them.
“Babangida was the one who poured acid on Usman and in the process, some of the liquid spilled over to Faisal.
“It is also established that the suspect vowed to deal with the girl since her family resented their union.”
The police said that the suspects who were arrested by men of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) in Kano, and have already admitted committing the offence, will be soon be charged to court over the offence which has left their victim disfigured.
