Former football star Michael Owen says his son James is battling Stargardt disease, an incurable eye condition causing progressive vision loss and that he is willing to give his eyes for him.
Owen disclosed this in an interview with Sky Sports.
James, now 20, was diagnosed at eight with Stargardt disease, impacting his central vision, especially in low light and at a distance.
Despite these challenges, James has embraced a positive outlook on life, redirecting his passion from football to academics and business.
Having stepped away from the football field, James is currently pursuing a business degree with aspirations to establish his own company.
Owen, renowned for his football career with Liverpool, Manchester United, and England, said he would willingly “swap eyes” with his son if it meant he would regain full vision.
“James is an incredible young man,” Owen stated. “He has faced adversity head-on and remains an inspiration to me and everyone who knows him.”
In their quest to raise awareness about Stargardt disease and contribute to finding a cure, the Owens have established the James Owen Foundation.
The charity focuses on funding research initiatives dedicated to understanding and eventually eradicating Stargardt disease.
“We want to make a difference,” Owen stated. “Our goal is to support families navigating challenges similar to ours and, ultimately, to contribute to finding a cure for Stargardt disease.”
