Miyetti Allah Counsels Sokoto Govt Against Deposing Sultan

The National Executive of the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria (MACBAN) has condemned the subtle threats to emasculate the Sultan of Sokoto and President General of the Nigeria, the symbol of Islamic authority in Nigeria.

Baba Othman Ngelzarma, National President of MACBAN, made the call in a statement, on Saturday.

Daily Trust reports that there were fears and controversies over alleged moves by Sokoto government to depose the Sultan, following the sacking of 15 district heads by the state government.

The Sokoto government has, however, denied such moves.

But in its statement, MACBAN said it is “worried by the the Media reports attributed to the Sokoto government that it intends to whittle down the powers of his Eminence the Sultan, Alhaji Saad Abubakar III.

“The institution of the Sultanate which dates over two hundred years, cannot be toyed with by underperforming politicians who instead of addressing the pervasive hunger, unemployment are dissipating energy on unimportant issues that will further polarise the society in an already volatile security situation in their states.”

He said the organisation stands firmly with the Sultan because they believe he deserves better as he had shown capacity to uphold justice and equity in all his dealings as can be seen in his efforts in propagating religious and ethnic tolerance in Nigeria among diverse groups.

He said, “His (Sultan) background as a military man, his resoluteness to speaking the truth and his standing for the poor and underprivileged despite being an aristocrat makes him a model for leaders to emulate.

“We therefore believe protecting and preserving the institution of the Sultanate is a cardinal responsibility of every right thinking personality in the country.”(Daily Trust)
