The Federal Executive Council (FEC) on Wednesday approved N985 million for the purchase of body scanners by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency.

The amount is part of the N1.7 billion contracts approved for federal agencies by the federal cabinet at its Wednesday meeting.

Femi Adesina, the president’s spokesman, gave the breakdown of the awards to journalists after the FEC meeting presided over by President Muhammadu Buhari.

The spokesman said the full body dual view scanners with X-ray management software would be procured and installed at Lagos, Port Harcourt, Enugu, and Kano Airports.

“You know that NDLEA has been doing wonderful things in recent times,” Mr Adesina said. “Now, it has this approval to install and commission four full body dual view scanners solution with X-ray management software at those four airports; Lagos, Port Harcourt, Enugu, and Kano.’’

Aside the procurement of body scanners by the NDLEA, the acquisition of a permanent office for the Nigeria Extractive Industries, Transparency Initiative (NEITI) in Abuja would gulp N537 billion, while the balance of N187 million is to be used for purchase of vehicles for the Federal Road Safety Corps, FRSC.

Mr Adesina said the operational vehicles are needed by the FRSC to meet its goals of reducing accidents by at least 15 per cent and fatalities by 20 per cent.

“The Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) got approval to procure operational vehicles, and that is to reduce carnage on our roads and to meet its goals of reducing accidents by at least 15 per cent and fatalities by 20 per cent,” he said.

Mr Adesina noted that “NEITI had been in a rented place. Now, it has approval to acquire a property for its head office.”

Furthermore, Mr Adesina disclosed that the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) and the Ministry of Water Resources got the council’s approvals to purchase vehicles and for the revised estimated total cost for supervision consultancy contract of Ile-Ife Multipurpose Dam Project in Osun, accordingly.
