A Nigerian, Oluwami, “Wami,” Dosunmu-Ogunbi has made history as the first Black woman to earn a PhD degree in U-M Robotics at the Michigan University.

Dosunmu-Ogunbi speaking at the University-wide commencement ceremony touched on the importance of advocates and mentors that helped achieve her dream.

The Nigerian during her address also delivered a message about the importance of inclusion.

She said she is one of the numerous PhD students who start their programs without a clear idea of what exactly they want to achieve.

Dosunmu-Ogunbi, however, added that as she graduates, she sees a lot of opportunities to use her engineering knowledge to improve the lives of other people in the society.

“A Michigan Engineer is one who does not just provide scientific and technological leadership,” she stated at the engineering graduate student commencement ceremony last Wednesday.

“However, a Michigan Engineer is one who is intellectually curious, socially conscious, creates collaborative solutions to societal problems, and promotes an inclusive and innovative community of service for the common good.”(Guardian )
