Aloy Ejimakor, lawyer of Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), says the secessionist is preaching unity while in the custody of the Department of State Services (DSS).

Kanu was arrested on June 25 and extradited to Nigeria to face trial for alleged treason.

TheCable had reported how Kanu was lured to an African country with the promise of a donation, and then arrested.

The IPOB leader is facing charges bordering on treasonable felony over his campaign for secession, and proposed establishment of the Republic of Biafra.

Kanu had jumped bail in 2017 after a military action, code-named “Operation Python Dance”, targeted his family house in Abia state.

In a tweet on Sunday, Ejimakor said he met with Kanu for four hours, adding that the separatist is cheerful in the DSS custody.

The lawyer said during the meeting, Kanu stressed the importance of unity and tolerance on all sides.

UPDATE: Today, I met with Onyendu at the DSS. We spent nearly 4 hours. My interaction with him was fulfilling. He’s cheery & looks forward to overcoming this predicament sooner than later. Again, he stressed UNITY and tolerance on all sides. He has you all in his thoughts.

Abubakar Malami, attorney-general of the federation (AGF), had said the IPOB leader was “intercepted through the collaborative efforts of Nigerian intelligence and security services”.

Binta Nyako, judge presiding over Kanu’s case, had ordered that he be remanded him in DSS’ custody, pending the continuation of his trial.

But in an application filed through his team of lawyers, Kanu alleged that he has been “subjected to mental and psychological torture” by the DSS.

Kanu, therefore, asked the federal high court in Abuja to transfer him from the DSS custody to Kuje prison.  (The Cable)
