Obasa Withdraws Son from Agege LG Race, Sends Strong Message Against Imposition in APC
In a surprising political twist that has sparked intense discussion across Lagos State, the Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mudashiru Obasa, has withdrawn his son, Abdulganiyu Obasa, from the All Progressives Congress (APC) chairmanship race in Agege Local Government.
Abdulganiyu, widely seen as his father’s favored aspirant, failed to present himself for the APC’s screening exercise—an omission that effectively ends his candidacy and reopens the race to other contenders.
The withdrawal follows mounting opposition from APC stakeholders in Agege, who criticized the younger Obasa’s perceived lack of political experience and accused the Speaker of attempting to impose his son on the electorate. In a petition reportedly sent to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, aggrieved party members warned that such imposition could trigger internal unrest within the party.
Rather than stoke further tensions, Speaker Obasa appears to have stepped back in a move that political observers interpret as a deliberate gesture to uphold party democracy and unity. Analysts view the decision as a clear message to APC power brokers: candidate imposition is no longer acceptable.
“This is not just about Obasa and his son,” said a senior party member familiar with the development. “It’s a statement to all political godfathers in Lagos APC that handpicking candidates without due process is no longer the way forward.”
With the race now wide open, attention shifts to other potential contenders, including the incumbent Chairman, Ganiyu Egunjobi, who is believed to be eyeing re-election, though he has yet to make a formal declaration.
