Ofokutu Royal Family Challenges Osun Governor Adeleke Over Alleged Imposition Of Haastrup As Owa Obokun Of Ijeshaland

The Ofokutu Royal Dynasty and the Ijesha People have taken legal action against Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke over the installation of Oba Clement Adesuyi Haastrup as the Owa Obokun of Ijeshaland.

The matter, which has been in court, saw its first hearing before Justice Aderibigbe of the Osun State High Court, Ilesa Division. The judge adjourned the case to March 6 for further proceedings.

Prince Adebanji Obembe Ofokutu, representing the Ofokutu family, criticised the selection process.

“It’s the turn of the Ofokutu’s to provide a candidate for the Owa as the other ruling house had reigned in the past,” he said.

“But sadly, the Haastrup family, who had ruled twice in the past, illegally hijacked the throne, using the state apparatus.”

He further alleged irregularities, stating, “A kangaroo process was followed during the installation of Adewuyi Haastrup.

“Supported by the state governor, out of 13 kingmakers, only 5 were allowed in the kangaroo scheme against the wish of Ijeshaland.”

Princess Oluwatoyin Faloye, Nee Obembe, also expressed dissatisfaction, saying, “The state requested each contestant gets a form for N10 million to contest for the throne.

“I challenge Adesuyi Haastrup to get into the room known as ‘Ipebi’ for traditional rites if he knows he is qualified.”

The Ofokutu family contended that the state ignored a court injunction to proceed with Haastrup’s installation, accusing the government of politicising the kingship.

The family vowed to seek justice and ensure the rightful heir ascends the throne.

Governor Adeleke had presented the staff of office to Haastrup in December 2024, following the passing of the previous monarch, Oba Adekunle Aromolaran, who reigned for 42 years.

During the ceremony, Adeleke urged Haastrup to act as a “father of all” and to use his wealth of experience for Ijeshaland’s development.

The Ofokutu family remains resolute, insisting that the process undermined traditional customs and justice. (SaharaReporters)
