Ondo: Final-Year Student ‘Commits Suicide’ After Vigil %Post Title


Modupe Ayandare, a final-year student of Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba Akoko (AAUA) in Ondo State, has allegedly committed suicide.

Daily Trust reports that Ayandare was a 500-level student in the Department of Agronomy, Faculty of Agriculture at AAUA.

Her body was discovered hanging at the back of a church in her off-campus hostel. She was dressed in white clothes, indicating she might have attended a vigil.

A coursemate, who wished to remain anonymous, stated that Ayandare left the hostel on Sunday for a church program but did not return.

“We’re surprised when we heard she committed suicide early this morning (Monday) around 4 a.m. after the vigil,” the coursemate said.

The Nigerian Association of Agricultural Students (NAAS) at AAUA expressed grief over Ayandare’s death.

Alake Raphael, NAAS President, in a statement, said she was known as ‘comrade modesty’ and that her suicide occurred at Onireason Street, near the permanent site of the off-campus hostel.

Raphael urged students to support one another and seek help if struggling, noting the availability of counseling services.

The Students Union Government (SUG) at AAUA has called for a thorough investigation into Ayandare’s death.

Noble Olaogbebikan, SUG spokesperson, assured that law enforcement is involved and committed to uncovering the truth..

Police spokeswoman Funmilayo Odunlami-Omisanya, confirmed the incident in a phone interview with Daily Trust, noting that the Akungba Police Division is already investigating the case.
