Oyo govt inaugurates installation committee for new Alaafin
The Oyo State Government has inaugurated a committee for the coronation of the new Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Abimbola Akeem Owoade as the 46th monarch of the ancient town.
In a statement made available to newsmen on Monday by the commissioner for Information and Orientation in the state, Prince Dotun Oyelade, the coronation has been scheduled for April 5, 2025, at Oliveth Baptist High School, Oyo.
According to the commissioner, the development followed Governor Seyi Makinde’s official presentation of the staff and certificate of office to Oba Owoade on January 13, 2025.
The commissioner also disclosed that the installation committee has been divided into subcommittees to facilitate effective coordination and planning for a smooth coronation ceremony.
The newly formed committee comprises members from the Alaafin’s palace, the Oyo State Government, and other key stakeholders.
Their mandate includes organizing a coronation ceremony that honours the rich cultural heritage of the Oyo Kingdom.
The committee is composed of notable figures, such as Hon. Ademola Ojo, the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Matters.
Among the members are Prince Abiodun Owoade and Prince Adeniyi Owoade, who bring royal lineage to the committee.
The ALGON Chairman of Oyo State and the Chairman of Atiba Local Government also play vital roles, alongside Salami Akeem, the Chairman of Oyo West, and Aikomo Olufemi, the Chairman of Afijio Local Government.
Additionally, the committee includes the Chairman of Oyo East Local Government, Prof. Musibau Babatunde, the Commissioner for Budget, and Sunday Odukoya, the Executive Assistant on Security.
Other key members comprise the Director-General of Protocol, Dr. Ganiyu Ajadi, and a Member of the House of Representatives, Hon. Gbenga Oyekola, an Oyo State House of Assembly member, along with Imma Bolaji and Mr. Oguntola, who serves as Permanent Secretary for Protocol and Government House, among others.
Oyelade also disclosed that the coronation ceremony is anticipated to attract dignitaries across Nigeria and beyond, including traditional rulers, government officials, and prominent figures from various sectors.
Meanwhile, the government assured the public that all necessary arrangements are being made to ensure a successful and memorable coronation ceremony, and security measures, cultural displays, and other logistical considerations are being meticulously planned to reflect the significance of the historic occasion.
