Paul Usoro, a senior advocate of Nigeria (SAN), has been elected president of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA).

Auwalu Yadudu, chairman of the electoral committee, disclosed this while announcing the result of the election held in Abuja, on Monday.

He said Usoro polled 4,509 votes to defeat Okafor Obi and Ernest Ojukwu who scored 4,423 and 3,313 votes respectively.

Abubakar Mahmoud, incumbent president of the association, described the election as the fairest held so far.

According to Courtroom mail, a total of 16,115 lawyers were accredited in the election but 12,421 lawyers voted.

A group of lawyers under the auspices of Concerned Members of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) had petitioned Abubakar Malami, attorney-general of the federation, over the election which they described as illegal and unconstitutional.

The lawyers demanded that the general council of the NBA should be convened as enshrined in the body’s constitution — in a situation where the association is unable to conduct its election at the end of July. (The Cable )
