It was an emotional moment on Thursday, in Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital, when a governorship contender of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Ladi Adebutu, declared support for Adekunle Akinlade, the governorship candidate of Allied People’s Movement (APM), ahead of Saturday’s election.

Ladi Adebutu, who was the candidate of the PDP recognised by the national leadership of the party, lost the battle on Wednesday as an Abeokuta High Court ruled in favour of Senator Buruji Kashamu as the authentic candidate of the party.

At a private facility in the state capital, many supporters of Adebutu burst into tears immediately the announcement was made to them.

A source present at the meeting, who confided in Daily Independent on condition of anonymity, revealed that Adebutu told his supporters that they were not defecting to the APM but on a working relationship with Akinlade for the election.

Adebutu was quoted to have said: “On Monday, we will all come back to the PDP.”

Adebutu was also said to have told his supporters: “I can see some people crying because they are pained, you can’t be more pained than I am, but I must not take you to the wilderness and allow you to perish.”

It was gathered that an agreement was signed by four members from each side which culminated in the relationship.

A copy of the agreement, which was sighted by our correspondent, indicated that Akinlade would concede two commissioners, three senior special assistants, two special advisers, five special assistants, Chairman of State Universal Basic Education Board or the Local Government Service Commission and Director General of Bureau of Lands or Chairman of the Ogun State Property and Investment Corporation (OPIC).

In the area of infrastructure, the two parties also agreed to construct 100-kilometer of rural roads per annum, construction of Ilisan/Ago-Iwoye road, reactivation of Olokola free trade zone, reactivation of Argo Cargo airport, Sagamu Ogijo road dualisarion, Ijebu Ode Ejinrin road dualisation, and construction of Oba Erinwole bypass, Sagamu.
