The Labour Party’s Presidential candidate in the 2023 general election in Nigeria, Peter Obi, on Thursday visited the University on the Niger (UNINIGER) in Umunya, Anambra State, in his ongoing commitment to fostering development in critical areas of health, education, and poverty reduction.

At the university’s Iyi-Enu campus, he donated N50 million to support the institution’s growth and infrastructure needs. Additionally, Obi visited the School of Nursing at Iyienu Mission Hospital, Ogidi, where he contributed an additional N10 million.

Writing on his X handle, Obi highlighted the importance of financial support in these sectors, stressing that such contributions are investments, not expenditures, essential for driving development.

“The financial support we give to health, education, and poverty reduction initiatives is not expenditure, but an investment in crucial areas that will propel our development,” Obi said.

Obi voiced his concerns regarding the neglect and underfunding that have plagued Nigeria’s health and education sectors.

He enumerated severe challenges facing the health sector, including inadequate funding, infrastructure deficits, and a shortage of healthcare professionals.

Nigeria currently falls short of meeting the World Health Organization’s (WHO) recommendations for healthcare personnel, particularly doctors and nurses.

“The solution to this urgent shortage lies in investing more aggressively in the training of healthcare professionals nationwide,” Obi emphasized.

Obi expressed his gratitude to the staff, management, and students of both institutions, acknowledging their contributions to Nigeria’s health and education sectors.

“Our sacrificial investments today will form the foundation of tomorrow’s development strides,” he said, adding, “I remain confident that a New Nigeria is Possible.”

Obi’s commitment to these sectors reflects his vision for a more robust and self-sustaining Nigeria, where investment in human capital drives the nation’s progress.
