Pharrell Williams, the US singer, has been named the new creative director of Louis Vuitton menswear.

In a statement on Tuesday, Pietro Beccari, Louis Vuitton’s chairman and CEO, described Williams as “a visionary” and a “global icon”.

He added that the way the singer breaks boundaries aligns with Louis Vuitton’s status.

“I am glad to welcome Pharrell back home, after our collaborations in 2004 and 2008 for Louis Vuitton, as our new men’s creative director,” he wrote.

“His creative vision beyond fashion will undoubtedly lead Louis Vuitton towards a new and very exciting chapter.”

The music star also took to his Instagram page to confirm the appointment.

Williams will succeed Virgil Abloh, the brand’s first African-American artistic director and high-profile designer, who died in November 2021.

Abloh was said to have battled cancer before his demise.

The development will also mark the second time a black American designer will be heading position at the French luxury house.

Williams first collection as the new creative director for Louis Vuitton will be shown in June at Men’s Fashion Week in Paris.

Louis Vuitton is one of the world’s leading international fashion houses.

It is part of the luxury goods group LVMH, which is owned by Bernard Arnault.
