The United States of America has commenced the construction of a “new and modern” consulate
worth $537 million in Lagos state.

Babajide Sanwo-Olu, governor of Lagos, was present alongside Mary Beth Leonard, US mbassador, and Claire Pierangelo, US consul general, at the ceremony that marked the beginning of the project.

The groundbreaking ceremony was held on Thursday.

The structure will be located on a 12.2-acre site in Eko Atlantic City where, according to the US Mission, “an estimated $95 million will be invested in the local economy, and the project will employ approximately 2,500 Nigerian citizens, including engineers, architects, artisans, construction workers, and administrative staff”.

The project is expected to be completed in 2027.
