Police defuse explosives in Maiduguri
The Nigeria Police Force’s Explosive Ordnance Disposal Unit successfully recovered and defused unexploded military ordnance in Maiduguri following reports from concerned citizens.
The incident occurred on Saturday, November 22, 2024, a statement from Force Headquarters said.
The EOD team, responding swiftly to the reports, secured the affected areas and safely removed six unexploded projectiles, one mortar bomb, and a military hand grenade.
The explosive devices were found in the Dala Kacchallah area and the Gwange Riverbank, respectively.
Police authorities believe that recent flooding may have washed the ordnance ashore, where it was later discovered by local scavengers.
“All ordnances were safely evacuated without any loss of life, injury, or property damage, and normalcy has been restored,” the statement added. “In both instances, the EOD-CBRN team safely removed the ordinances, declared the areas safe, and conducted explosive risk awareness campaigns to sensitise residents.”
The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, commended the EOD unit for their professionalism and swift response.
The police are currently investigating the origin of the explosives and taking steps to prevent future incidents. The public is urged to report any suspicious objects to the authorities immediately.
