The presidential committee set up to ensure that the Super Eagles qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup will reportedly receive ₦3 billion from the Federal Government.
According to sports media outlet SCORENigeria, the FG has included the funds in Nigeria’s budget for the 2025 fiscal year.
“The Federal Government has earmarked ₦3 billion to a presidential committee, now to be known as the Presidential Support Group (PSG), that will assist the Super Eagles in qualifying for the 2026 World Cup,” the report read.
“The start-up fund for the PSG has been captured in the country’s 2025 budget. The PSG will provide financial, administrative, and logistical support for the Super Eagles to turn around a faltering qualifying campaign for the 2026 World Cup.”
The Super Eagles are in a precarious situation regarding their qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which will take place in the United States, Canada, and Mexico, having started the campaign on a disappointing note.
As it stands, Nigeria’s hopes of playing in the tournament are shaky, with the Super Eagles currently occupying the fifth position in their 2026 World Cup qualification group table after four matches.
Nigeria has a total of three points, having played out three draws and lost 2-1 to the Benin Republic, who, alongside Rwanda and South Africa, lead the group standings with seven points each.
The Super Eagles must win all their remaining games, even in South Africa, and hope that other countries cancel each other out.
The clearest path to qualification is for Nigeria to win all their remaining fixtures, which would take them to a total of 21 points and should undoubtedly help them finish at the top of the group.
Firstly, to achieve that, Nigeria must secure a maximum of six points from their double-header against Rwanda, whom they recently lost to at home. This would deal a heavy blow to one of the main contenders for the top spot.
The Super Eagles will resume their 2026 World Cup qualifying campaign in March next year with a visit to group leaders Rwanda before a home clash with bottom team Zimbabwe.
