President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Joe Ajearo, has attributed the government’s policy somersault to the current price war between the Nigeria National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) and Dangote Refinery.

Speaking with airport correspondents yesterday at the Murtala Muhammed Airport Terminal II, Ajearo described what has been going on between the two entities as fraudulent, saying in a deregulated economy there is choice and competition, adding that the basis for regulating and deciding what Dangote Refinery is going to sell its product is fraudulent.

Ajearo called on Nigerians to speak up as government tries to dictate to the private sector how much it should sell its product.

“For a product produced here, he didn’t import with the dollar, there was no landing cost and they want him to sell it at the same cost of what they are bringing from abroad. That is fraudulent and unacceptable,” the NLC boss said, adding that developments in the past two weeks in the sector were meant to frustrate Dangote.

On the implementation of the N70,000 minimum wage by the government, Ajearo said there is no cause for alarm as it will be implemented according to the agreement reached on April 18, 2024. He said the meeting on the consequential adjustment committee is currently working towards its implementation.
