Prince Harry, Meghan Markle split celebs
Ever since former members of the British Royal Family, Prince Harry and his wife Meghan Markle, granted an exclusive interview to popular talk show host, Oprah Winfrey, it has continued to generate diverse reactions.
In the interview, the couple had stated that the royal family did not protect them enough from the British press and that Markle suffered discrimination on account of her race.
Though the ‘dramatis personae’ of this real life drama are in the United Kingdom and United States of America, the issue has generated intense debate among Nigerians on social media. Some Nigerian celebs have also commented on the issue, with some commending Prince Harry for standing by his wife against abuse, while some berated the couple for not being ‘loyal’ to their family.
Media personality, Toke Makinwa, wrote on her Instagram page, “Before you come out to support Meghan, please make sure the wives married to your family are not going through hell too. Some of you hate your brother’s wife but are quick to crucify the British royal family. Charity begins at home. Let that woman breathe.
“There might not be racism in your family but there is classism. Your own mother is wicked to your brother’s wife. You think she is spending all your brother’s money or controlling him, yet you are trying to fix the royal family’s problems? Fix your own first.”
Another media personality and a one-time winner of Big Brother Africa, Uti Nwachukwu, however felt people should always stand by their family, regardless of the situation. He wrote on Twitter, “Family first always. You see this love thing, if it makes you turn your back on family, then watch out.
“Even if Clifford Orji (convicted cannibal) was part of my family, I would never join anyone (especially a romantic partner) to bring down and condemn my family. Never! Loyalty is key.
“Meghan did absolutely nothing wrong. Racism is disgusting. But you see Harry, no bro. Even if you come from a family of cannibals, loyalty should never be compromised. She did well. I applaud her strength and bravery but him, I fear for his future.”
Social media personality, Laura Ikeji, also weighed in on the matter. She wrote on Instagram, “Family is everything, but if yours is different, it is okay to step away. I pray my siblings and I don’t get to a point where we never speak to one another. God forbid!
“Before now, I’d always say stick to your family because family is everything. But now, I know better. If your family is toxic, it is okay to step away…”
Several Nigerians also expressed their opinions on the issue on social media.(punch)
