Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) secured their Ligue 1 title without kicking a ball on Sunday as closest rivals Monaco suffered a 3-2 defeat to Lyon.
Monaco’s loss handed PSG a 12-point lead at the league summit with only three matches remaining, crowning them champions for a record-extending 12th time in French football history.
While PSG had the chance to seal the title themselves on Saturday against Le Havre, they needed a dramatic 95th-minute equalizer to salvage a 3-3 draw.
Nonetheless, coach Luis Enrique confidently declared his team as champions, citing their substantial lead in points and goal difference over Monaco.
Monaco’s stumble against Lyon confirmed PSG’s league triumph, setting the stage for their upcoming Champions League semi-final clash against Borussia Dortmund on Wednesday in Germany.
Monaco initially took an early lead against Lyon through Wissam Ben Yedder, but Alexandre Lacazette and Said Benrahma turned the tide in Lyon’s favour before halftime. Despite Ben Yedder’s second goal levelling the score at 2-2, substitute Malick Fofana netted a late winner for Lyon.
PSG’s dominance in Ligue 1, particularly in the last decade, underscore the impact of the Qatari ownership since 2011, transforming both the club and the landscape of French football.
It is PSG’s 12th Ligue 1 title and their 10th in the past 11 years.
With a potential clean sweep of trophies this season, including the upcoming French Cup final against Lyon on May 25 and the French Champions Trophy already secured, PSG aim to extend their success in Europe by progressing to the Champions League final on June 1 under Luis Enrique’s leadership.
