Recording Academy considers Afrobeats category for Grammy Awards %Post Title

The Recording Academy says plans are currently being considered to create an Afrobeats category for the highly coveted Grammy Awards.

CEO of The Recording Academy, Harvey Manson Jr., confirmed on September 26 that the academy had a sit-down and listening session with key players like producers, artistes, songwriters and executives players in the Afrobeats scene.

He further explained that a proposal would have to be submitted by members of The Academy before deliberation begins, to ensure that the various sub-genres under Afrobeats are duly represented.

Over the years, Nigerian veteran artistes such as King Sunny Ade, Femi Kuti and Seun Kuti have received nominations for their various bodies of work from The Academy.

In recent times, the Grammy Awards has continued to acknowledge the growth and presence of the Afrobeats genre.

Nigerian superstars Wizkid and Burna Boy have gone on to receive nominations and even won the coveted award in 2021 for “Best Music Video” and “Best Global Music Album” respectively.
