Rivers foreign scholars allege community’s neglect by Oando

Some natives of Omoku in the Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni Local Government Area of Rivers State, who are currently studying abroad, have called on President Bola Tinubu to intervene in the alleged neglect of their community by Oando Plc.

The students, under the umbrella of the Omoku Students in Diaspora, expressed their total support for the Omoku Development Council in its efforts to address the ongoing marginalisation of the area by the oil company.

In a statement issued in Port Harcourt on Thursday and signed by one of their  leaders, Chima Elenya, the students expressed their disappointment over Oando’s failure to fulfill its corporate social responsibilities, especially considering that Omoku is one of the company’s major oil-producing regions.

The statement noted that the diaspora students had expanded their campaign to the national level in a bid to get President Tinubu’s attention on their grievances.

They alleged that Oando’s neglect has led to abandoned infrastructure, environmental degradation, and economic hardships for the local population.

The students also urged Omoku natives worldwide to unite in solidarity, drawing inspiration from the Ogoni people, who have successfully fought for their environmental and economic rights.

Furthermore, they called on President Tinubu to advise Oando Plc to take immediate action to address the concerns of the host communities.

The student body emphasised that the communities deserve better infrastructure, improved healthcare facilities, quality education, employment opportunities, and environmental restoration, given Omoku’s significant contribution to Nigeria’s oil industry.

The statement read, “The Omoku students in diaspora remain steadfast in their commitment to justice, equity, and sustainable development for their homeland.”

The students pledged to continue working with key stakeholders, including the government, civil society organizations, and the international community, to ensure that Omoku receives the recognition and support it rightfully deserves.(Punch)
