The International Cat Federation says it has banned Russian cats from its competitions as a punishment for President Vladimir Putin’s invasion of Ukraine.
In a statement on Thursday, the federation — which prides itself as “the United Nations of Cat Federations” — said it was “shocked and horrified” that Russian troops will invade Ukraine and “start a war.”
The French organisation — also known as the Fédération Internationale Féline (FIFe) — said the measures were decided on Tuesday, as they “cannot just witness these atrocities and do nothing.”
FIFe said the ban would remain in place until the end of May and would then be reviewed.
“No cat bred in Russia may be imported and registered in any FIFe pedigree book outside Russia, regardless of, which organization issued its pedigree,” FIFe ruled.
“No cat belonging to exhibitors living in Russia may be entered at any FIFe show outside Russia, regardless of, which organization these exhibitors hold their membership in.”
According to its website, FIFé was first formed in 1949 and hosts over 700 shows each year, where more than 200,000 cats are exhibited.
The sanction comes at about the same time when Warner Bros., Disney, and Sony Pictures Entertainment, announced that they will not be releasing their recent movies in Russian cinemas.
Governments across the world have been ramping up sanctions against the Kremlin.
In the past few days, global corporations, including car manufacturers and energy giants, have cut business ties with Russia.
