Sanwo-Olu charges new Lagos LG leaders to deliver campaign promises

Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has called on the newly elected chairmen and vice-chairmen of the state’s 20 Local Government Areas (LGAs) and 37 Local Council Development Areas (LCDAs) to deliver on their campaign pledges, promising robust state government support.

Speaking at the “Onboarding Retreat for Chairmen and Vice-Chairmen” themed “Driving Grassroots Development through Strategic Governance” at the Sheraton, Ikeja, Sanwo-Olu, represented by Deputy Governor Dr. Kadri Obafemi Hamzat, emphasized aligning local priorities with the state’s THEMES PLUS Agenda for inclusive development.

“The work ahead of you is urgent, and the expectations of our people are high,” Sanwo-Olu stated, highlighting challenges like waste management and public health.

“Your constituents will not measure your performance by your campaign promises, but by the visible and measurable impact of your actions.”

He urged collaboration with community stakeholders, adding, “Governance is not about power, it is about service, responsibility, and impact.”

The retreat, organized by the Ministry of Local Government, Chieftaincy Affairs, and Rural Development, equips leaders with governance tools, as Commissioner Bolaji Robert noted: “This initiative is a strategic move to ensure a seamless transition into new roles and to position chairmen for efficient and impactful leadership.”

Hon. Sanni Okanlawon, Chairman of the Lagos State House of Assembly Committee on Local Government, urged leaders to view their roles as a trust, stating, “Your success is the success of the people of the grassroots.”

Conference 57 Chairman Hon. Sesan Olowa, representing the new leaders, affirmed their readiness, saying, “We are battle-ready our role is very, very critical and crucial to the survival of democracy, and the Greater Lagos Project.”

Sanwo-Olu also paid tribute to President Bola Tinubu for fostering autonomous local governance, reinforcing Lagos’s commitment to grassroots progress.
