Tottenham sack Postecoglou two weeks after winning Europa League
Tottenham have parted ways with Ange Postecoglou as coach on Friday.
The North London club announced Postecoglou’s exit two weeks after leading the club to the Europa League title.
Postecoglou leaves his role at Spurs after securing the club’s first trophy in 27 years, defeating Manchester United 1-0 in an uninspiring final.
The Australian coach, however, did not impress domestically, with Tottenham enduring their worst-ever season. The club finished the EPL season in 17th position.
Tottenham revealed that a season review led to the exit of Postecoglou.
“Following a review of performances and after significant reflection, the Club can announce that Ange Postecoglou has been relieved of his duties,” the statement reads.
The club added that although Postecoglu entered legendary ranks at the club due to his European success, its board unanimously agreed that there is a need for a change of guard in the dugout, despite emotions from the European triumph.
The statement also added that the club wants to compete on multiple fronts with its young and talented squad, hence the need to make the tough decision to part ways with Postecoglou.
“It is crucial that we are able to compete on multiple fronts and believe a change of approach will give us the strongest chance for the coming season and beyond.
“This has been one of the toughest decisions we have had to make and is not a decision that we have taken lightly, nor one we have rushed to conclude.
“We have made what we believe is the right decision to give us the best chance of success going forward, not the easy decision.
“We have a talented, young squad, and Ange has given us a great platform to build upon.
“We should like to express our gratitude to him. We wish him well for the future – he will always be welcome back at our home.
“News on the appointment of a new Head Coach will be announced in due course.”
Tottenham, who finished the season with only 38 points, will face Paris Saint-Germain in the European Super Cup on August 13.
