The U.S. Department of Justice and the Nigerian government have announced the formation of a new Bilateral Liaison Group on Illicit Finance and Cryptocurrencies.

Officials say the partnership aims to combat cybercrime and financial crimes related to digital assets.

The initiative is part of the U.S. strategy to promote secure cyberspace and digital technologies that enhance economic prosperity while addressing cyber threats and illicit activities.

The new liaison group aims to improve Nigeria’s capacity to investigate and prosecute cybercrime, focusing on issues such as illicit financial flows and the misuse of cryptocurrencies.

“The United States reaffirms our commitment to a close partnership with Nigeria, and the U.S. Department of Justice is continuing its coordination with the Government of Nigeria to build its capacity to pursue cybercrime investigations and prosecutions,” a statement by the U.S. Department of State read.

The collaboration marks an essential step forward in international efforts to regulate digital finance and curb criminal activities within the increasingly complex realm of digital currencies.
