United States and its NATO allies in Europe came under lacerating scrutiny on Thursday on Twitter as the hashtag #IstandwithPutin, trended.

Some claimed the hashtag was the creation of Russian misinformation campaign.

But it gained much traction to the extent it was number one trending topic on Twitter America and Twitter Nigeria.

It was also accentuated by the decision of countries such as India, South Africa, Namibia, Senegal, Tanzania, Zimbabwe, Angola to abstain from UNGA vote condemning Russian invasion.

Many African countries had enjoyed Russian support during the struggle for decolonisation, when the West typecast them as terrorists.

On Thursday, the US-NATO traducers relied on past comments by leaders such as Nelson Mandela, Fidel Castro and even contemporaneous comment by talk show host Trevor Noah, to attack the West.

Many Twitter commenters accused the United States of hypocrisy in its response to Russian invasion of Ukraine, counterpointing that the U.S. has had more records of invasion of sovereign nations.

Several tweets published a table of American invasion, from Cuba to Vietnam, Syria, Iraq, Libya, Japan and Afghanistan and wondered why the western world went berserk because Russia was trying to protect itself.
