Vanessa Bryant sues over leaked photos at Helicopter crash site

Vanessa Bryant is suing Los Angeles County, the sheriffโ€™s department and LA County Sheriff Alex Villanueva over alleged photos taken at the helicopter crash site which took the life of her husband Kobe Bryant in January. 26.

The lawsuit, filed last Thursday in the Superior Court of California on Tuesday, cites emotional distress, negligence and invasion of privacy.

It alleges at least eight sheriffโ€™s deputies took photos on their personal cell phones of the crash. Additionally, a deputy trainee shared the photo with a member of the public days after the crash, according to a bartender who witnessed the interaction and then filed a written complaint to the department.

โ€œAt the moment the deputies snapped photos of Kobe and Giannaโ€™s remains, they created a harm that cannot be undone, and the Departmentโ€™s response has only exacerbated that harm,โ€ the lawsuit says.

Sheriff Alex Villanueva previously told news media that eight deputies took or shared graphic photos of the scene and he ordered the images deleted. The sheriff said the department has a policy against taking and sharing crime-scene photos, but it does not apply to accident scenes.

Separately, Vanessa Bryant has also filed a lawsuit alleging the helicopterโ€™s pilot, Ara Zobayan, was careless and negligent to fly in the fog and should have aborted the flight.

The brother of the pilot has said in a court filing that Bryant knew the risks of helicopter flying and his survivors arenโ€™t entitled to damages from the pilotโ€™s estate, while the helicopter company, Island Express, said it is not responsible for damages, calling the crash, among other things, โ€œan act of Godโ€ and โ€œan unavoidable accidentโ€ that was beyond its control.
