Considering the role of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) in Nigeria’s development, the importance of the Scheme has once more been brought to the fore.

Director-General of the NYSC, Brigadier General Shuaibu Ibrahim had reiterated the role that the NYSC had played when he featured on Nigerian Television Authority (NTA) programme, “Harnessing Nigeria’s Education of Youth” on Thursday.

He stated that no one would suggest that the scheme be scrapped, having seen its contributions in the nation’s development.

The DG stated that the role of corps members in elections had made international observers commend the scheme, stating that even the chairman of Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) was quoted as saying that NYSC contributed creditably to the election in the country.

Shuaibu stressed that those who knew what the NYSC had done would not suggest that it be scrapped, pointing out that corps members had contributed immensely to the development of the country.

The NYSC boss who regretted that fake corps members had shown up at camps with fake documents and so he charged parents to monitor the activities of their children as some of them who had been rusticated from school would not inform their parents but would continue to pretend to be in school and at the end of the day, they would resort to forging certificates to ensure they served the compulsory one year service programme.

He said that the organisation had put up a mechanism to check the activities of fraudsters, which also included physical verification, pointing out that the sensitisation is very wide and members of the public were aware of the implications of faking to be graduands or showing up at the camp illegally.

Answering questions as to the position of the organization in the area of members influencing their postings to choice areas, like Lagos and Abuja, he said that sometimes parents for fear of security challenges could want to influence their wards placements but said that some corps members after their orientation may want to remain in the original places. He said that the aim of the scheme was for national unity and most times the places were safe contrary to fear being expressed by parents.

He said that only corps members who studied abroad were given chance to choose areas of choice for postings, based on NYSC policy.

The DG who maintained that his desire was to see improvement in the area of technology, leave a highly appreciated and respected scheme, even as he warned corps members to desist from embarking on unauthorised trips as most of the accidents involving corps members were those who left their areas of primary assignments without authorization.
