Ogun APC Insists Gbenga Daniel Remains Suspended Despite NWC Position
The leadership of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ward 4, Sabo, Sagamu, has insisted that the suspension of former Ogun State governor and senator representing Ogun East, Gbenga Daniel, is still in force.
The ward executives maintained their stance during a press briefing on Thursday, stressing that the party’s National Working Committee (NWC) cannot overrule the disciplinary action already taken at the ward level.
According to the ward secretary, Aduroja Oluwole, who addressed journalists alongside the ward chairman, Adebayo Ismail, and other officials, he explained that the suspension followed what they described as clear acts of anti-party behaviour.
He said the action was carried out in line with the party’s constitution and remains binding until properly challenged through the appeal process.
Oluwole noted that although the NWC has the authority to discipline erring members, the constitution does not empower it to nullify decisions taken by lower party organs.
He pointed to specific sections of the APC constitution, arguing that disciplinary powers exercised at the ward, local government, state, or zonal levels are independent and only subject to appeal — not review — by the national leadership.
He said the directive issued by the APC National Secretary, which suggested that Daniel remains a bona fide member of the party, was “misplaced” and had no constitutional foundation.
According to him, the suspension temporarily halts Daniel’s rights and privileges in the party until any appeal is heard and determined.
The ward executives accused Daniel of working against the party during the last general elections and allegedly attempting to obstruct justice at various tribunal sittings. They insisted these actions were never challenged by the senator, hence their decision to reaffirm the suspension.
Meanwhile, Daniel’s media aide, Steve Oliyide, has dismissed all accusations, describing the suspension as politically motivated. He alleged that Governor Dapo Abiodun is behind the plot to edge Daniel out of the party ahead of the 2027 contest for the Ogun East senatorial ticket.
Daniel has repeatedly denied all allegations of anti-party conduct and questioned the legality of a suspension issued in a ward where he is not registered.
He further recalled that his principal supported Abiodun’s emergence in 2019, saying the hostility began only after Daniel declared interest in the 2022 senatorial primaries.
