Diplomatic Drama: Nigerian embassy shelters opposition candidate after Guinea-Bissau coup
The Nigerian embassy in Guinea-Bissau has offered asylum to the country’s opposition presidential candidate, Fernando Dias da Costa, following reports that his life was in danger. Dias da Costa is said to have sought refuge after receiving serious threats in the tense political environment.
This development comes after military officers in Guinea-Bissau announced a coup last Wednesday. The soldiers declared that they had taken full control of the government, creating uncertainty and fear among citizens and political leaders.
According to DAILY POST, the military leadership suspended all election-related activities, saying they were necessary to “restore order.” They also closed the country’s borders to prevent movements in and out of the nation. However, after several hours, the borders were reopened, though normal activities remain disrupted.
The sudden takeover has raised concerns across West Africa, especially among democratic institutions and neighbouring countries. Nigeria’s decision to protect Dias da Costa highlights growing worries about political instability in the region. Diplomatic observers say this move could lead to further discussions within ECOWAS and the African Union on how to respond to the developing situation.
