AFCON 2025: Algeria petitions CAF, FIFA over Nigeria quarterfinal officiating

The Algerian Football Federation has confirmed that it has submitted formal complaints to both the Confederation of African Football (CAF) and the Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) over refereeing decisions in its 2025 Africa Cup of Nations quarter-final clash against Nigeria.

The announcement was made on Monday via the official X handle of Équipe d’Algérie de football.

The complaints were accompanied by a request for an investigation to clarify the controversial decisions and ensure appropriate action is taken in line with established regulations.

In its statement, the FAF said it could not overlook refereeing calls in the match, which it claimed raised questions and caused widespread dissatisfaction.

“The Algerian Football Federation cannot overlook the refereeing decisions in the last match, which raised questions and caused widespread dissatisfaction, as they undermined the credibility of African refereeing and do not serve the image of African football internationally.

“Accordingly, the Algerian Football Federation has formally contacted CAF and FIFA by submitting an official complaint, accompanied by a request to open an investigation, to clarify what occurred and take appropriate action in accordance with applicable regulations,” the federation said.

The FAF’s petition comes after a 2-0 defeat to Nigeria on Saturday, which ended the Desert Foxes’ campaign.

Goals from star striker Victor Osimhen and forward Akor Adams propelled the Super Eagles into the semifinals.

The match ended in chaos as Algerian players confronted match officials on the pitch.

A post-game video circulating online shows scuffles between some Algerian players and the match officials, as well as an attempted pitch invasion by fans that was thwarted by stadium security.

CAF announced on Monday that it has launched an investigation into alleged misconduct by players and officials during the game.

The body said it has collected match reports and video evidence suggesting potentially unacceptable behaviour and has referred the matters to the Disciplinary Board for further review.

Meanwhile, FAF also called on fans to remain supportive of the national team, which it described as being in a rebuilding phase.

It emphasised the importance of learning from the tournament to prepare for upcoming competitions, including the 2026 World Cup.

The federation expressed confidence in the players, technical staff, and all officials involved in national football, praising their dedication and commitment throughout the tournament.(Punch)
