Nurse Sent To Prison Over Corps Member’s Death
A Magistrates’ Court sitting in Abeokuta, Ogun State, on Thursday, ordered remand of a 37-year-old nurse, Kehinde Adesanya, at the Ibara Correctional Centre, over alleged conspiracy, attempted abortion, and murder.
Adesanya is facing a four-count charge bordering on conspiracy, attempt to procure abortion and murder.
The police prosecutor, Solomon Babalola, filed an ex parte motion seeking an order to remand the defendant.
He requested that the court remand Adesanya for an initial period of 60 days at the Ibara Correctional Centre pending legal advice from the State Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP).
Babalola told the court that the alleged offences were committed between January and March at the Ikereku area of Laderin, Abeokuta.
He alleged that the defendant conspired with others still at large to procure an abortion for one Victoria Ariyo, a 23-year-old corps member serving in Abeokuta.
Ariyo died and was buried last week following suspected complications from an abortion procedure.
On Monday, one Abass Olalekan, an official of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), who was accused of impregnating the deceased, was arraigned in court and granted bail.
According to the prosecutor in the nurse case, Adesanya allegedly supplied drugs to the deceased in an attempt to terminate the pregnancy.
He added that the drugs reportedly led to Victoria’s death.
He said the offences contravene Sections 516, 230, 324, and 319 of the Criminal Code Laws of Ogun State, 2006.
Delivering her ruling, the Magistrate, Mrs O.O. Sam-Obaleye, granted the application and ordered that the defendant be remanded at the Ibara Correctional Centre pending legal advice from the State DPP.
The case was adjourned until May 26 for mention.
