Wolverhampton Wanderers relegated from EPL
Wolverhampton Wanderers’ relegation from the English Premier League was confirmed on Monday night following a goalless draw between Crystal Palace and West Ham United.
Rob Edwards’ side becomes the first club to confirm their relegation status this season.
The draw moved West Ham United up to 33 points from 33 matches in the safety of 17th position, with bottom-of-the-table Wolves stuck on 17 points, unable to match the Hammers’ points tally if they win all remaining five league games.
They return to the Championship after an eight-year stay in England’s top football league with three wins and eight draws in 33 matches.
The Midlands club suffered a poor start to the season with just two points from the first 18 matches, a first in the history of top division football in England. The club suffered an exodus of key players, Matheus Cunha, Rayan Aït-Nouri, and Rúben Neves, to top clubs, and the outcome was the inability to keep a clean sheet in the first half of the season.
It took them 20 matches to claim their first league win, and they have lost 22 matches this season.
Rob Edwards, club head coach, had resigned to fate after losing 3-0 at Leeds United on Saturday, but assured fans they’d strive to return immediately.
“It’s obviously been a long time coming, and our situation has been difficult for all of this season, and even seasons before, as we know and we’ve spoken about.
“So all I can do is promise them that we’re working extremely hard to make sure that we’re not feeling like this again.”(TheCable)
