NNPC Denies Refinery Scrap Sale, Warns of Fraud
NNPC refinery scrap scam claims have been firmly dismissed by the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC Ltd), which warned the public against fraudulent messages and individuals falsely advertising the sale of refinery equipment and scrap materials.
The state-owned oil company said it has not authorised any sale of refinery scrap, components, or equipment, urging Nigerians and businesses to ignore such claims and remain vigilant.
NNPC Issues Strong Denial
The NNPC refinery scrap scam gained traction following reports and messages circulating online suggesting that the company was disposing of materials from its refineries.
However, NNPC clarified that it has not issued any request for bids, tenders, or approvals for the sale of scrap materials or refinery assets from any of its facilities.
The company stressed that all such claims are false and misleading.
Fraudsters Impersonating NNPC Officials
A key concern highlighted in the NNPC refinery scrap scam is the emergence of fraudsters posing as representatives or agents of the company.
According to the statement, these individuals are:
- Claiming to facilitate sales of refinery scrap
- Soliciting payments from unsuspecting victims
- Using fake documents and unofficial channels
NNPC warned that these actors are not authorised and are attempting to defraud the public.
No Sale of Refinery Assets
NNPC reiterated that it is not conducting any form of sale involving refinery materials, including scrap metals, equipment, or stored components.
The company emphasised that any legitimate disposal of assets would follow:
- Transparent processes
- Regulatory compliance
- Official public communication through verified channels
It added that no such process is currently underway.
Public Urged to Exercise Caution
As part of its response to the NNPC refinery scrap scam, the company advised:
- Individuals to verify any business claims directly
- Companies to avoid engaging unofficial intermediaries
- Stakeholders to rely only on NNPC’s official platforms
The firm also encouraged victims or those approached by suspected fraudsters to report such incidents to law enforcement agencies.
