Trump reshares post renaming Strait of Hormuz ‘Strait of Trump’
U S President Donald Trump has stirred fresh controversy after appearing to endorse a proposal to rename the Strait of Hormuz as the “Strait of Trump,” amplifying the idea through a reshared post on Truth Social on Wednesday.
The post, which included a map labeling the narrow but strategically vital waterway under the new name, quickly drew attention given the Strait’s global importance.
Connecting the Persian Gulf to the Gulf of Oman, the route serves as a critical artery for international oil shipments, with a significant portion of the world’s crude supply passing through it daily.
While the gesture appears largely symbolic, it comes at a time of heightened geopolitical tension involving the United States and Iran.
The Strait has long been a flashpoint in relations between the two countries, frequently at the centre of disputes over security, sanctions, and freedom of navigation.
Trump’s reshared post also echoes earlier remarks in which he hinted at renaming the waterway, a suggestion widely viewed as provocative rather than a formal policy initiative.
International waterways such as the Strait of Hormuz are governed by longstanding conventions and global recognition, making any unilateral renaming effectively impossible.
Nonetheless, the timing of the message has added to market jitters as oil prices climbed, as concerns grew over potential disruptions to supply, with Brent crude rising to its highest level in years amid uncertainty surrounding the Strait.
As reported by the Economic Times on Thursday, oil prices rose on Thursday as worries mounted over a prolonged U.S. blockade on Iranian exports and stalled nuclear negotiations, increasing fears of tighter global supply.
Brent crude climbed to its highest level since mid-2022, as tensions linked to the Iran conflict continued to disrupt flows through the Strait of Hormuz.
The surge followed an Axios report that Trump rejected Iran’s proposal to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, indicating the blockade may persist until a wider nuclear agreement is reached.
