‘In unity, we win’ – Obi, Kwankwaso supporters convene summit in Abuja
Supporters of Peter Obi, former governor of Anambra, and Rabiu Kwankwaso, ex-governor of Kano, are set to hold a unity summit in Abuja.
The summit, themed ‘One Voice, One Vision: In Unity We Win’, is scheduled to take place today.
A flyer posted on X by the OK Movement on Friday shows that eight speakers will address the conference, including Buba Galadima, chieftain of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP); Aisha Yesufu, activist; and Isaac Fayose, brother of former Ekiti governor.
Others are Moses Paul, a former chairmanship candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), and Adebayo Adefolaseye, the OK Movement south-west coordinator.
As of the time of filing this report, about 428 Nigerians had registered to attend the summit.
The development comes amid growing speculation over the anticipated defection of Obi and Kwankwaso from the ADC to the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC).
On Friday night, Habibu Mohammed, spokesperson of the Kwankwasiyya movement, told TheCable that the two ADC chieftains will finalise the move next week, adding that the decision followed a unanimous endorsement by stakeholders.
Mohammed said discussions with the NDC have reached “about 90 percent”, with only minor issues left to be resolved, adding that the former governor and Obi, the 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP), may move to the NDC on Monday or Tuesday.
“I believe him, Peter Obi, and some others will be joining the NDC,” Mohammed said.
TheCable understands that the lingering ADC leadership imbroglio is at the heart of the decision.
On Thursday, the supreme court set aside the controversial status quo ante bellum order in the ADC leadership dispute and returned the matter to the federal high court for determination — effectively resetting the contest without resolving it.
In April, supporters of Obi and Kwankwaso launched the OK Movement to mobilise support for a joint ticket in the upcoming elections.(TheCable)
