I’ll secure NDC VP position…. it’d open door for Kano to produce president – Kwankwaso
Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, a chieftain of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), says he is confident of securing the party’s vice-presidential slot, which would eventually open the door for Kano state to produce the president.
The former Kano governor spoke over the weekend during an interview on Premier Radio.
“By God’s grace, the next election will be unlike anything that has ever happened in our state and country, especially if I secure the ticket and my name is on the ballot,” Kwankwaso said.
“Since the First Republic, despite our struggles and political wisdom, Kano has never produced a vice president. This is both disappointing and deeply saddening, but by God’s grace, it will be corrected.
“Kano state will rightfully secure this position, which will open the door for our state to eventually produce the president of this country.
“People from the south who understand what is happening are already registering with our party. The north, especially the north-west, must be careful and ensure they do what is right so they do not make a decision they will deeply regret.”
Kwankwaso and Peter Obi, presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP) in 2023, defected from the African Democratic Congress (NDC) to the NDC early this month.
TheCable understands that Obi and Musa Kwankwaso joined the NDC on the condition that they would contest the 2027 presidential election on a joint ticket, with the former Anambra governor as presidential candidate and the former defence minister as his running mate.
Nigeria has long operated an informal power rotation arrangement between the north and south, with many arguing that a southerner should complete eight years in office by 2031 before power returns to the north.
Kwankwaso suggested that if the former Anambra governor is elected president in 2027 and he becomes vice-president, the arrangement would position him to succeed Obi in 2031. (TheCable)
